Caroline's blog •
Caroline is Jean-Noël Gagnard's only daughter. After studying business in Paris, she returned in 1989 to the village where she was born and grew up. For the first year she divided her attentions between managing the estate and learning about viticulture at the Beaune Lycée Viticole and about œnology at Dijon University.
Not one to back down when challenged, Caroline first had to make her place in a world where men are not used to being confronted by women.
As soon as she took over management, she introduced a terroir-based policy. This included abandoning Premier Cru and Village cuvées from many small, hardly-known plots within the Chassagne-Montrachet appellation.
Aware that this policy had its limits, she nevertheless developed the Cuvée L'Estimée, a blend of red wine that combines the qualities of the Domaine's vineyards in various lieux-dits (or "named places") in Chassagne-Montrachet. Caroline Lestimé also met other challenges such as acquiring further vineyard plots and planting new vines with her trademark enthusiasm and determination.
Environmental issues are another concern nowadays. Supported by a small number of men and women in her endeavours to meet the most exacting qualities, Domaine Jean-Noël Gagnard's progress from strength to strength is in fact a team effort.
First and foremost, the ambition of Domaine Jean-Noël Gagnard is to reveal to wine lovers around the world the magic of its terroirs.
